re: Pop Quiz - To me, Mars (in Scorpio) square Pluto would mean that every transiting planet that contacted Mars would be challenged by the lord of Scorpio himself, Pluto, to use that energy to produce or accrue power. Rex did that for Exon; Harvey did this for his co. and himself.
Harvey's conservative Capricorn Moon opposes Uranus in Cancer, sponsor of the Women's Liberation Movement, and squares both Eris in Aries and Saturn in Libra slightly wide), but at least a T-square that created difficult energy circumstances for him repeatedly, where he clearly failed repeatedly.
Rex's sensitive Pisces Moon conjuncts Venus and Pallas. He likes traditional women but with these three trine Uranus in Cancer he's okay with non-trad. women also, plus Uranus is conjunct his ascendant! He must be pretty non-trad. himself or appear to be.

A. This is the best answer received, and mostly on target. Only one thing I would point out and that is that we don't have an accurate birth time for either of these two, so the charts used are the default noon times. Therefore Rex likely doesn't have Uranus on the Ascendant.

re: Trump’s progressed Moon – In Trump’s top five astro-events, couldn't this progressed Moon event also represent women in the family? This is like punch number one of an astrological one-two punch. Moon-Pluto and Venus-Uranus? Yikes.

A. In general, the progressed Moon doesn’t act like the natal Moon and the key phrases we usually associate with the Moon. The progressed Moon is a timer of emotionally signficant events. Still, transiting Saturn has been around his natal Moon, so the observations still holds.
re: SA-PL - Just curious: How will the coming Global Corporatocracy be different
from the current state of government? Elected officials are owned by those who fund them: follow the money (corporation/business/despot) to see who bought whom, and know that laws will be enacted for their benefit. Yes, many of those actions have been covert, but W Bush, with the creation of Citizen's United, made our country's corporate ownership overt. And corporations have no conscience. They care not about global warming, unless they can make a dollar from it. As long as
business-as-usual is generating billions of dollars, climate change
means nothing.

re: SA-PL - Love your Newscope blog and interpretations of our political events. I have read on numerous blogs that the upcoming Pluto/Saturn conjunction will mean conservative power, government, etc. due to Saturn and Pluto both being in Capricorn. Some astrologers have interpreted this to mean that the GOP and possibly Trump will win re-election in 2020. However, the past 9 months of the Trump administration has been anything but conservative and seems more like a radical repudiation of our constitution and past governmental norms and institutions.
So I was wondering if this 2020 Pluto/Saturn conjunction could mean that we return to our traditional governing norms and shore up our government institutions in response to a failed and chaotic Trump administration? Perhaps a return to constitutional basics and less conspiratorial and ideological based ideas and more practical forms of governing. I seem to recall in my astrological readings that Saturn also represents structure, reality based thinking and justice (because it is exalted in Libra). Therefore, wouldn't Saturn demand a return to evidenced based policy, such as the reality of climate change, or Is this just wishful thinking on my part?

re: NCAA football - Some yr.'s ago, I suggested you do an astrological analysis of the University of Arkansas football coach Bobby Petrino. You did, and it was interesting. Coach Bobby Pitrino is now at the University of Louisville, and has been very successful. I have an additional suggestions for you to consider: the University of Alabama football coach, Nick Saban, has the BEST NCAA football program in all of America. They are ranked #1 again this year. From an astrology point-of-view: WHY?

re: Pluto-Mars - I'm having cold chills and looking for metaphysical/esoteric balm. I noticed that the square between transiting Pluto and the U.S. progressed Mars started Mar/Apr '16 during the brutal primary season when Pluto went Rx. Just before the election it went direct at 15 degrees and a racist, sexist plutocrat narrowly won; votes were still being counted as the square became exact and he was sworn in. Pluto went Rx, but it just turned direct at 17 degrees and will again square progressed Mars at (approx.) 18 Libra. My question is, will it be over when Pluto gets to 19 degrees since this is an aspect to a progressed planet?

A. These are good observations and an excellent question. In my opinion, the re-awakening of the racist, sexist element in U.S. culture is due to progressed Mars being in the U.S. 12th house, which when activated, awakens all kinds of mean-spirited, aggressive, violent behavior. Other outer planets or progressed planets will continue to stir up this progressed Mars long after Pluto has passed this critical contact. But Pluto’s square is the most hostile.
re: Lilith - Your segment on Lilith and patriarchy? SO good. I loved it.

re: sex scandals - Scandalous revelations are not unique to the US. There have been many in France, Switzerland, the UK and here in Quebec. Jupiter and Lilith in Scorpio are having an effect in many countries.

re: Merkel - I was just reading an article about the roles that Macron and Merkel are
going to need to play in the EU. Are they a compatible duo?

re: progressed Mars - I appreciate your addressing the U.S. progressed Mars. I confess that I'm even more distressed for myself since my p. nodes are conjunct this potentially violent energy at 16 degrees S/Libra and N/Aries.
Plus there are other contacts good and not so good, but my chart seems also closely linked to the U.S. chart with a long list of aspects starting with <snip>. Thank you for the heads up that it will last two more years. I hope I have enough good energy in my chart to survive!

A. Your natal planetary connections to the U.S. chart can be quite telling in the professional life, but are not likely related to your divorce or other personal affairs.

re: presidential election study - I have been a proponent of your Scorpio Rising natal chart for the USA for many years, since I was introduced into the concept back in the 1970's, through the works of, and conversations with Marc Penfield; and your postings on the internet, and book. I thought it useful to do this study years ago. It sheds some light on US Presidential Party change, or not, in connection with the election cycle. I thought that you might find it of interest. <snip> History informs that a U.S. Presidential Election concurrent with any Saturn-Uranus aspect, hard, soft, or neutral, is very likely (76.9 %) to result in a change of party in the U.S. Presidency.

A. Thank-you. Very interesting!

re: NewsScope - Still waiting to see an article entitled "The Shadow Side of Liberalism"
re: Bitcoin - Great post on Bitcoin. I have seen charts that locate Bitcoin in Dublin, not London. What is the difference? Why London? Why Dublin? The world is being remade. Signs are everywhere. "Bitcoin" is one of them. Thanks for interesting and timely reading.

re: Al Franken - Franken's sexual indiscretions are not the moral equivalent of full-blown sexual predation ... be it of an adult or a child. And certainly the application of moral equivalency still does not excuse his behavior. The Democratic Party is now promoting zero tolerance and Franken, though he is not the President or Roy Moore, is paying the piper. I notice that Black Moon Lilith, since around October, has been near the Galactic Center. I am curious ... just how much of all this ... since Weinstein to the present ... is Black Moon Lilith?

A. A lot of it! I've written previously about how progressed Lilith is in the US 12th house and with Mars, both being opposed by the progressed Midheaven, and squared by transiting Pluto. Read the most recent entry on this subject here: http://www.neptunecafe.com/nsc111317.html

re: Lilith - I'm fascinated with your mention of Black Moon Lilith’s influence on the US (guns and sexuality), as well as her influence on Israel. If you ever have time to write about her influence of Europe and Switzerland, I would love to hear about it!

re: war - Have you ever seen, in an inauguration chart, a configuration that suggests war (Mars-Saturn in a challenging aspect) and yet actual warfare with another country did not manifest?

A. I haven’t done that study, sorry. But yes, war does look increasingly possible on the Korean peninsula, and Mars in Pisces does square Saturn in Sagittarius in Trump’s Inauguration chart. Mars square Saturn could also represent Trump’s daily struggle for his political survival, and the bitter partisan politics that his presidency has brought.

A. Thanks for the links and interest in NeptuneCafe. The article where I referred to yoga is six years old now, and hardly anyone reads that. I wrote a more recent piece about how an injured pro wrestler used yoga to heal himself. So I am a fan of yoga and its benefits, and will keep your article on 18 ways yoga benefits health for future reference. I would like to merge astrology with yoga in some way, but it's not so easy. re: Trump - Thanks again for showing the fascinating correlations between Trump’s astrology and his behavior. His upcoming eclipsed super full moon on January 31 ties interestingly to the date of his 2018 State of the Union Address, to be delivered only hours before on January 30. The event looks set to provide plenty of controversy, don’t you think?

A. Thanks for the feedback. That's an excellent insight about the State of the Union!

re: death - Are you good at seeing death in a chart? Are Ceres-Pluto aspects part of the signature?

A. In general, that’s not something I look into. Ceres-Pluto does deal with major life transformations, which may or may not include death, but at least the grieving process is evident, along with the survival mode mind-set, or its opposite, the giving up. I've looked at a few death charts and seen some commonalities. Richard Houck's "The Astrology of Death" is a good source, but half of it is Vedic astrology. Still, he points out the prominence of Jupiter in death charts (the ultimate journey), the lunar nodes activated, and the 4th house conditions (end of the matter).

re: John Bouvier Kennedy - I was reading an article about John Bouvier Kennedy Schlossbert (Caroline Kennedy's son) and how he looks so much like John Kennedy Jr. He's very much interested in climate change and has said he 'aspires to a career in politics". Perhaps you could do a newscope article on this young man and whether his chart has 'presidential potential'.

A. Thanks for the suggestion. Looks like a good idea...

re: Washington - Could you give me/us the Birth Date of the State of Washington...... ??? (Sure wish we still had access to all of your subjects, as they were/are a gold mind of information.... ) Thank YOU.

A. I have Nov 11, 1889 for the state of Washington, set in Olympia, time unknown. Penfield uses 2:27 pm based on his rectification. About “access", all back issues of NewsScope are available, I recently updated the menu where you can find the links. It's difficult to organize them because it makes NeptuneCafe so slow in adding new pages.

re: NewsScope - I was just reading old Newscopes at the archives and I know I was blessed the day I found your site. Just reading your columns gives me relief, I think because you make sense of complex situations. Occasionally I even laugh! Thank you for all your enlightening columns.

re: tax bill - I was looking at chart set for Trump signing tax bill. Is there a special significance to the fact that Saturn and Sun conjunct at 0 degree Capricorn. Just how often can that occur?

A. Yes, it's very rare, and is why I said that it's an empowerment of the corporations, especially since it's in the 10th house. The corporate tax rate was lowered from 35% to 21% - a huge subsidy of American corporations paid for by U.S. taxpayers and an expanded federal debt of $1.5 trillion.

re: Oumuamua - I searched your website as best as I could to see if you have looked into Oumuamua, the first of its astronomical class as an interstellar object, but saw no results. If you have reviewed this item, please direct me to that. If you have otherwise looked into this, my question is what have you found. It was initially described as a comet, then changed to asteroid, but the first ever object from interstellar space. An article said it first appeared from the direction of the star Vega. That would be at 15-Cap-33 I believe, and close to conjunction with Pluto at the time. I thought I would try to see if I could find a date, time of discovery, and location at the observatory in Hawaii for this discovery. It is not easy as most references are to the date only, October 19 2017.

A. Thanks for the info. I haven’t done anything on Oumuamua…

Rod Rosenstein, FBI Deputy Director under Fire

Washington politics is intensifying. As Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling and obstruction of justice reaches a critical turning point, Trump is turning the heat up on Rod Rosenstein, the FBI Deputy Director who appointed Mueller and has oversight over the investigation. Last Friday a reporter asked Trump if he was going to fire Rosenstein, and the president responded, “You figure that one out.”
Rosenstein was born with his Sun in orderly, business-first Capricorn (January 13, 1965; Philadelphia, PA; time unknown), where it trines hard-working Mars in Virgo. The Sun conjoins Pallas (the Goddess of Justice), which in turn trines Jupiter in Taurus, and the generational Uranus-Pluto conjunction in Virgo. This character-shaping Earth Grand Trine is expressed in his apolitical, professional, ethical role that has made him a reliable prosecutor through the last five presidents’ administrations.

Rosenstein was appointed one year ago when his progressed Sun was opposing natal Pluto, signifying the pivotal position he would assume. Speculation has been rife during his entire first year that Trump would turn on him as a way of getting rid of Mueller. During that time, transiting Uranus in late Aries was adversely aspecting Rosenstein’s Sun-Mars trine. Uranus makes its final quincunx to natal Mars in mid-March.
So, over the next six weeks, Rosenstein’s job status is under pressure from the radical, impulsive Uranian vibe. Adding to the astrological pressure, he has a progressed Venus-Saturn conjunction at 8º Pisces shaping up, which is often an indication of sadness, becoming a victim. Since this progressed aspect is exactly octile (45º) his Capricorn Sun, he is indeed a political target. In January 2020, the Saturn-Pluto conjunction lands right on his Sun, so he’s bound to be a central player during the next two years of the Trump era.
Millennials Embrace Astrology

Over the past year or so, numerous mainstream news media have published articles about how popular astrology is getting, especially among millennials. The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Buzzfeed, and The Atlantic* are just a few of the respected journals that have written complimentary explanations of what astrology is beyond Sun signs, and why millennials in particular are embracing astrology’s deeper symbolism.
It’s true that transiting Pluto was at 19º Capricorn in April and May 2017, so why didn’t the market go into a tailspin then? Actually, financial analysts were issuing warnings beginning around this time, but not until the progressed Moon activated this Pluto-to-Moon configuration did we get any real turbulence: last week, the progressed Moon was at 19º Cancer. Major market moves like this are not the result of this or that indicator, but a confluence of simultaneous astro-events. What else is happening in this chart?
Everyone knew the markets had climbed too high for too long. Experts have been calling for a 10% correction for the last two years. But not until the Lunar Eclipse on January 31 (last Wednesday) were traders seeing the kind of volatility that leads to a major sell-off. The eclipse took place at 11º37’ Leo, precisely conjunct the NYSE Leo Ascendant (orb: 0º01’), setting the stage for the dramatic reversal.

This chart’s Aries Moon represents the public’s bullish tendencies that can push prices beyond reasonable valuations. Last Friday, transiting Pluto at 19º Capricorn was exactly squaring this Aries Moon (orb: 0º01’) when the markets opened sharply down. It’s no coincidence that on Black Tuesday at the beginning of the Great Crash of 1929, transiting Pluto was at 19º Cancer and also squaring the NYSE Moon.
The NYSE Hits a Speed Bump

Financial astrologers are in general agreement that today’s American stock markets trace their origin to the Buttonwood Agreement that created the New York Stock Exchange on May 17, 1792, but the time used for the horoscope varies considerably. I prefer a relatively popular version set for 10:10 am, and last Friday the Dow’s stunning 665-point plunge was strongly reflected in this chart.
Astrology is traditionally ruled by Uranus, and the simplest explanation of this surging trend is that we are entering the Age of Aquarius, ruled by Uranus. Aquarius is associated with networking, a systematic approach, logic, and friends, and all of these keywords fit neatly into the Facebook generation. The internet itself is symbolized by the WorldWideWeb, or www, which is very similar to the glyph for Aquarius.

But astrology has a mystical side that goes beyond the scientific worldview, and that’s where Neptune comes in. Astrology’s vast conceptual framework, communicated via a symbolic language, is a mysterious process. Neptune provides the intuitive insights to distill these vast concepts into digestible pieces of knowledge. The internet, astrology’s renaissance, and the birth of the millennials all took place when Uranus and Neptune were conjunct in the early 1990s.
And now the millennials, astrology, and the internet are coming of age, as Uranus and Neptune form the opening octile within the Uranus-Neptune cycle. Uranus and Neptune were conjunct in the disciplined, patriarchal sign of Capricorn. Millennials are renowned for their respect of the older generation, and compared to previous generations, generally have close family ties. But their Uranian and Neptunian impulses are changing the social order through their understanding of how the internet works and, most astonishingly, through their fascination with astrology.
