Astrology and Health |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The most ambitious book ever written on astrology and health is H. L Cornell's "Encyclopedia of Medical Astrology," but this was written before Pluto or Chiron were discovered, two essential planets in considering natal health conditions. The field is ready for some breakthroughs, and Noel Tyl has gotten the ball rolling with his "Astrological Timing of Critical Illness." However, much remains to be done since the books available are generally overly simplistic, incompetant, or irrelevant. We've listed some of our favorites below. Just click on the title for more information or to purchase the book from amazon.com. |

Astrological Timing of Critical Illness by Noel Tyl is a comprehensive treatise on medical astrology, emphasizing an almost fatalistic approach to seeing illness arising from the natal horoscope. The author organizes the material according to what we know, that is, which natal placements indicate potential health problems, although he offers no suggestions for improving health. Then, through many case studies, the reader is shown the astrological indicators and techniques that time the outbreak of illness. With Pluto often acting as the main culprit, Tyl discusses many forms of cancer, diabetes, heart ailments, broken bones, rheumatoid fever, and much more. The only element missing in his analysis is Chiron. |

The Astrology of Crisis edited by Noel Tyl, is a collection of broad-ranging essays on the various kinds of crises the professional astrologer meets. The most profound and interesting article is by Robert Hand who discusses the significance of Saturn in Life Direction issues. You'll also find some great material on family, financial, midlife, relationship, and psychological crises, with an introduction by Noel Tyl who frames the various situations for astrological counseling. OoP Astrology, Nutrition, and Health by Robert Jansky Astrology and Your Health by Jeanne Avery, is an excellent primer on the astrological variables that describe individual health. Complete discussion on the Ascendant, the sixth house, and their ruling planets is accompanied by the corresponding body areas and types of illness that could become afflicted. In contrast to the entirely medical approach taken by Tyl, Avery's perspective is more appreciative of alternative health therapies such as acupuncture, dream analysis, gemology, radionics, Back Flower remedies, proper nutrition and exercise. Chiron and the Healing Journey by Melanie Reinhart, is filled with great mythological perspectives on Chiron taken from literature and historical settings.Chiron's metaphysical dimension is explained in a way that increases our personal sense of independence, compassion, and trust in one's own spiritual resources. Many case studies demonstrate Chiron's value in the natal horoscope, especially as an indicator for holistic health. |

The Gods of Change: Pain, Crisis, and the transits of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto by Howard Sasportas, takes a look at these three outer planets as agents of personal transformation. We all experience difficult life passages, and these tend to coincide with the angular transits which are urging us to take a broader perspective, to see the individual in relation with the larger whole. Filled with wisdom and common sense, this book brings serenity through insight. |

How to Give an Astrological Health Reading by Diane Cramer OoP |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Signs of Mental Illness by Mitchell Gibson, takes a unique approach to understanding mental instability by measuring the declinations of natal planets. The more planets an indivudual has that are Out of Bounds, that is, in relatively very high or very low declination, the more likely he or she is of being "eccentric." The author, who is not a professionalastrologer, takes his cue from the unusual work published by the Magi Society. Parallels and contra-parallels are easy to calculate and compare, and seem to provide an excellent yardstick for measuring depression, paranoia, and other forms of psychological imbalances. |
